I Shirelle Gatling was sent to Commonwealth Challenge Youth Academy back in October 2016. I've graduated from the academy March 2017 with promote academics, attention to detail, time management, and leadership while promoting self-esteem, confidence, and pride. Commonwealth Challenge is a five-and-a-half month residential phase, followed by a 12 month post-residential and mentoring phase. The residential phase is a structured, quasi-military style environment. The Academy is located on the State Military Reservation in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The Mission of the Virginia National Guard Commonwealth ChalleNGe Youth Academy is to intervene in the lives of 16-18 year old teenagers by providing the values, skills, education, and self-discipline needed to produce responsible, productive citizens, and to do so in a highly structured learning environment.
