Serves as “Acting Battalion Chief” in absence of Battalion Chief as needed. Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, which may include processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals. Assists in coordinating and/or conducting training activities. Assists in planning and scheduling daily work activities; coordinates, prioritizes, and assigns work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise. Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, protocols, standards, policies and procedures; ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individual; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations. Coordinates staffing and work schedules for fire/EMS stations; develops work schedules to ensure adequate coverage; adjusts shift schedules and assigns alternate coverage as needed. Responds to incidents requiring firefighting, emergency medical care, specialized rescue, and hazardous material response; supervises activities at incident scenes until relieved by a commanding officer; makes initial determination of necessary personnel, equipment, and suppression or containment tactics. Supervises and participates in firefighting activities; advances hose lines into fire area; selects hose nozzle, depending on type of fire; lays and connects hoses; holds hoses and directs stream of water onto fire; raises and climbs ladders; creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance using various hand and power tools; enters premises for firefighting, rescue, and salvage operations; uses chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, and other equipment. Assesses nature and severity of illness/injury and identifies life-threatening problems; establishes and prioritizes medical procedures to be followed and determines need for additional assistance; performs patient triage; takes and records patient's vital signs; performs physical examinations and obtains patient history. Administers Basic Life Support and/or Advanced Life Support care at emergency scenes in accordance with established medical standards and level of EMS certification. Gains access to and moves patients, utilizing protective equipment and taking quickest route to patient in consideration of safety of patient and emergency personnel; supervises patient safety during extrication procedures; prepares patient for transport in accordance with approved treatment protocols; performs physical lifting techniques associated with moving patients between incident site, stretcher, or ambulance; transports patients to medical facilities. Identifies hazardous materials and type of container or carrier at spill scene; uses various booms and barriers to contain spills and mitigate runoff; performs fire suppression activities as necessary; assists in direction of evacuation operations as necessary. Drives, maintains, and operates a variety of emergency response apparatus; performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions, including in day/night hours, in congested traffic, in adverse weather conditions, and in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted speed limits; determines best route to reach location of emergency calls. Supervises inspection of emergency response apparatus and equipment daily to ensure efficient operating condition and readiness; supervises and assists with cleaning/maintenance of equipment after completion of emergency response operations; performs minor repairs and assist in major repair of apparatus and equipment as appropriate. Assists with annual fire hose, ladder, and fire pump testing, and assists in maintaining records. Assists with basic company level inspection program to ensure fire code compliance; investigates spills, leaks, and pollution threats. Assists with preparation of pre-fire plans for multiple first-due fire companies, including map making and updating of street maps and subdivision locations; performs pre-planning inspections of business establishments; prepares drawings of layouts of each structure; maintains layout files; prepares drawings of locations of standpipes and sprinkler connections; inspects homes for fire hazards as requested by homeowners. Coordinates, conducts, and/or attends various training sessions on such topics as fire suppression techniques, equipment techniques, emergency medical care, hazardous material containment, street layout, and building or hydrant location; participates in daily physical fitness training programs. Prepares and maintains various records and reports of activities and emergency response operations. Assists in scheduling and conducting public fire education programs, including fire prevention week; appears before civic, community, school, and other interested groups and makes presentations on topics relating to fire safety and fire prevention. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, fire/EMS run reports, incident reports, casualty reports, injury reports, exposure reports, annual summaries, inspection reports, inventory sheets, purchase requisitions, performance evaluations, budget documents, pre-fire plans, site plans, maps, or other documents. Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, schedules, logs, checklists, incident reports, annual summaries, inspection reports, training requests, training records, time sheets, maintenance records, inventory records, purchase requisitions, pre-fire plans, architectural drawings, site plans, zoning maps, technical bulletins, policies, procedures, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. Serves in any section or division within the Department such as Training, Fire Prevention, Administration, Emergency Management and Logistics. Conducts pre-employment testing, interviews, credential checks and recommends hiring of applicants. Develops and updates curriculum for fire/rescue training as needed. Assist with preparation and participate in training programs. Oversees the Coordination of In-House Academy for new hire firefighters and lateral firefighters.

Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates fire and EMS operations; Establishes policies, procedures and ensures their implementation; Supervises and coordinates the preparation and presentation of an annual budget; directs the implementation of the departments’ budgets; plans for and reviews specifications for new or replaced equipment; Responds to alarms and may direct activities at the scene of major emergencies; Supervises the operation of departmental training activities; Controls the expenditure of departmental appropriations; Handles grievances, maintains departmental discipline, conduct and general behavior of assigned personnel; Plans departmental operations with respect to equipment, apparatus and personnel; supervises the implementation of such plans; Assigns personnel and equipment to such duties and uses as the service requires; evaluates the need for, and recommends the purchase of, new equipment and supplies; Meets with elected or appointed officials, other fire/EMS officials, community and business representatives, and the public on all aspects of the department’s activities; Represents the department in a variety of local, county, state and other meetings.

Employee performs supervisory and emergency response work in supervising an assigned Fire/Emergency Medical Service (EMS) station and personnel engaged in fire suppression, emergency medical care, administering basic and/or advanced life support based on level of EMS training; performs specialized rescue, hazardous material response, fire prevention and training activities; coordinates work activities; supervises response to emergency calls; performs fire suppression, emergency rescue and/or hazardous material containment in response to alarms; operates associated equipment and apparatus; processes documentation; supervises equipment inspection and maintenance; performs fire inspections; performs various maintenance and custodial duties at the assigned Fire/EMS station. Employee is subject to normal hazards of Fire and EMS work, including risk of exposure to infectious diseases. Normally reports to the assigned station Captain and Battalion Chief.

Performs emergency response work involving firefighting, fire suppression, emergency medical care, emergency rescue, specialized rescue, hazardous material response, hazardous material containment or cleanup work in response to alarms; Operates associated equipment and apparatus; Trains in the methods and techniques of emergency response and use of equipment/apparatus; Inspects and maintains equipment; performs fire inspections; Performs various maintenance and custodial duties at the assigned fire station; Reports to the assigned station Lieutenant/Captain; Encounters sensitive information in the performance of their duties and is expected to maintain that information confidentially; Released Driver-Pump Operator; Currently serving as an Acting Officer.
