Work History

Property Caretaker

Mark Claytor Attorney
12.2020 - 07.2024
  • Handled all aspects of property care during an extended period of owner absence.
  • Oversaw emergency restoration to restore livability alongside the insurance claim process and coordinated general property restoration post-tornado.

Summer Research

Roanoke College
06.2019 - 08.2019
  • Three-month intensive paid summer research project on active galactic nuclei (AGN) culminating in a poster presentation and a written report.
  • Wrote a research proposal to submit to Roanoke College for funding, and was one of a few selected from the Math, Computer Science, and Physics Department.
  • Employed learnings from chemistry and physics curricula in partnership with research advisor to investigate internal mechanisms of AGN.
  • Developed enough proficiency in SQL and Python to retrieve and analyze the UV, visible, near-, and far-IR spectra of different AGN gathered by multiple telescopes.

Physics Lab Assistant

Roanoke College
01.2019 - 05.2019
  • Assessed old physics equipment (a Cavendish balance, an interferometer, electron gun, among others) to determine what still worked, what needed to be replaced, and what could be repaired.
  • Analyzed cost estimates to determine financial viability of restoration versus replacement.

Chemistry Lab Technician

Roanoke College
01.2017 - 05.2018
  • Completed student research tasks unsupervised for up to 12 hours weekly, seeking guidance from research advisor when needed.
  • Synthesized copper indium sulfide (CIS) quantum dots (QDs) in small batches using a Schlenk line.
  • Removed ligands ("cleaned") using alcohols and centrifuging.
  • Used a fluorometer to measure the synthesized crystals' fluorescence in the visible spectrum, and then used an IR spectrometer to determine optical properties in infrared.
  • Created calibration curves for the ICP-OES using a standard solution.
  • Prepared nitric acid dilutions to specified strengths for use with the ICP-OES.
  • Set up the sample auto filler, and used the ICP-OES to determine the optical emission properties of the synthesized nanocrystals.
  • Helped acclimate and guide new student researchers in the lab.
  • Used a novel cleaning procedure from literature and adapted it to, and wrote the standard operating procedure for, the use of it in the lab with CIS QDs.
