Volunteer Work

Frog Watch Citizen Science Program:

Start date March 2025- Predicated end date is September 2025

  • Through this volunteer program hosted by the Rockwood Nature Center in Chesterfield, Virginia I became a certified frog watcher. My duties include monitoring a wetland of my choice from March to August in order to identify and record frog species via their mating calls. All data is reported to the Virginia Herpetological Society to better understand population numbers and update range maps. I also am monitoring specifically for the Eastern spadefoot toad (Scaphiopus holbrookii) due to their threatened status.

Wildlife Center of Virginia:

Start Date November, 2024 - Still involved currently

As a rehabilitation and treatment volunteer I perform many different tasks, some of which include

* Food preparation for mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians

* Conducting weight checks and recording consumed meals based on percentages

* Performing husbandry for a variety of species such as Eastern box turtles, Eastern ratsnakes, Eastern hognose snakes, cornsnakes, painted turtles, Eastern snapping turtles, and treefrogs of varying species

*Cleaning and disinfecting dishes, enclosures, and other surfaces

*Performing flight tests on raptor species to ensure they are ready for release

*Identifying and collecting browse for mammal species such as cottontail rabbits

*Assisting medical staff with handling, blood draws, data collection, radiographs, and paperwork
