Teacher of the Year twice in Surry County Public Schools

I was awarded Teacher of the Year in 1996 as a result of the massive academic progress made by a group of eight grade students who were not academically ready for the ninth grade, but were too socially advanced to remain with eight grade students in a middle school setting.  A program was birthed called "SPRINT"  (Special Remedial Intervention) and housed in Surry County High School.  I was the coordinator/teacher for the 18 students whom I taught four periods daily...English, Math, Physical Science, and Civics.  It was a huge undertaking, but all of the students grew academically, emotionally, and socially because of the strict/no nonsense environment that was established in the classroom on day one and the reward system that was established.

Again in 2000, I was awarded Teacher of the Year as the eighth grade Resource Special Education Teacher.  I taught the core eight grade subjects and all of my students mastered the state mandated assessments for that year.
